Red House Painters

Just got RHP (I). I just have to weigh-in with my thoughts here. hOoooo-ly shit, this is good!! Wow.

It's taken me two hours to get through the album cos I keep going back to hear the song I just heard. :-)

My recollection of when my buddy played a Mark Kozalek AC/DC covers record was a John Darnielle uncoventional voice. But that ain't the case, is it? Kozalek's voice is strong in a mainstream way, backed by melodic indie music. In lesser hands I'd go night-night; a Sea & Cake snooze, as it were. But this is the furthest thing from boredom. It's like Simon and Garfunkel jumped a time machine and stopped singing sappy shit. OK, this is a little sappy too, but not in a "sappy shite" sort of way. Who'd a thunk folk-pop could be gut-wrenching? Strawberry Hill is immense! I had to play that one three times already. 9/10.
