The Snake of June 'blood red sun' EP (Jezus Factory). All we'll say as a starter for ten is approach with due care and caution. Released in ultra limited quantities - exactly how many we aren't sure - this four track EP marks the debut UK release of Finnish / Brit trio the Snakes of June. This lot are described in passing by the label as a 'dirty doom metal band' which is fair to a certain point but then a quick peek at our initial jottings feature the following descriptive aids - rancid, puss pouring swamp dragged, gruesome, slo core, grizzled, decadent beatnik boogie, apocalyptic, in the best tradition of Am Rep, Helmet - hopefully you get the idea where we are going with this. The Snake of June do not - I repeat - do not take prisoners, these disfigured slabs of pariah like butchered blues sound like they've been spit out of hell or at the very least from a black hole - gargantuan in their grimness and gruelling in their no future, no hope bleakness.
That said there is a lighter side - for amid the choking down trodden sludge of the fuzzed out 'poisoned black moon' (which it has to be said really does sound like a seriously pissed off Soundgarden) there's a superbly brief moment at roughly 2.10 in when everything goes Rush like though that said the EP's best moment by far is the parting 'Stars'. Think John Spencer Blues Explosion meets Shellac overseen by a particularly screwed up Killing Joke - a scowling mass of viciously insurgent gnarled grind. Definitely worth casting an eye over
