Pharoahe Monch - Desire

douchebag [Edit] [Delete] 00:04, 4 August '08

This is one of those albums which i've listened to a ridiculous amount of times despite knowing it isn't really that great

On the one hand, it contains some of the most verbally dextrous lyrics found in any rap record. Monch is a superb rapper in technical terms, switching up his style at will and dropping incredibly complex rhymes all whilst avoiding the verbosity of many underground rappers and keeping it fairly traditional in terms of style. And the guy has some serious personality, some true beliefs, some strong political standpoints.

So why isn't it brilliant then? The beats themselves are sometimes a bit sluggish, but all the feelgood soul horns are totally fucking badass. And even the weaker R&B songs in the second half have moments of greatness spread abut them. Maybe it's because the beginning is so good that it seems to run out of steam. But even so, i listen to all of it, all the way through, all the time

Anyone else feel a similiar way? Anyone else give a shit?
