Review scores: a necessary evil?

Raoul_Duke [Edit] [Delete] 09:46, 12 August '08

Soooo, I was thinking. Almost everytime you read a review here on DiS the majority of the comments are a criticism of the score, rather than the opinion and sentiments found in the review itself. This can only lead me to think that many people scroll straight to the numbers at the bottom of the page - rather than the preceeding words - and then eagerly hammer their mouse button on the Comments button to register their gripe with this four character review they've just taken the time to read (five if it's a straight ten on ten)

So, my question is: wouldn't it be good if DiS did away with scoring their reviews and made people actually READ them to find out if the reviewer in question thinks the long player is worthy of your hard earned?

(I'm sure this thread has been started 100 time before. I'm just rubbish at the search function)
