The ATP vs The Fans muscial education thread

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 10:50, 27 November '08

I dunno about most people on here, but half of those names so far mean NOTHING to me. So I thought this thread could rectify that. Write a short post about why you should care about a certain band and provide a link to where you can hear some of the bands material. You can do the same for bands that get nominated by the fans once the first round of results get released. I'll start:

Young Marble Giants perform Colossal Youth

YMGiants are a 3 piece post punk band who deliver deceptively simple songs that on the one hand are fragile enough to break in your hand, and on the other complex enough to force your brain to invent layers of harmony and beats that don't exist on the actual release. With no drummer, and a brevity akin to early punk records, they defy the norm and in turn end up creating a sound uniquely theirs. 'Colossal Youth' (recently rereleased as a deluxe 3 disc edition on Domino) has come to be regarded as a classic from start to finish and reward the listener with every subsequent listen, and its playthrough at ATP should prove to be one of the festival highlights.

Songs taken in isolation barely do them justice, but a good starting place would be 'Searching for Mr Right' or 'BrandNewLife' on their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/youngmarblegiants

And the videos of their recent live performances suggest this is one reunion that shouldn't be overlooked.
