Bassists: come to me

jonny_rat [Edit] [Delete] 12:12, 8 January '09

I picked up a cheapo bass after christmas to learn on and sketch out some recordings. It is some FUN SHIT.

I'm coming to it as a guitar player, so I'm wondering if there are any habits that I need to avoid falling into? (Told myself that I'm going to avoid using a pick altogether for now.) I'm finding using my thumb to anchor my hand position a bit disconcerting for one thing; it's fine if I'm plugging away on root notes, but I lose it completely whenever I try and do anything fancy (just unable to co-ordinate myself enough to move the thumb to the string below the one I'm playing, if you know what I mean). Any tips?
