guitars - either way - i dunno really, i like rudimentary lead playing and stupidly complicated rhythm stuff...

drums - yes - shit drumming is unacceptable & great drumming usually = great band... probably because theyre not melodic it's harder to descend into cheese territory like with synths and that.

bass - no - just no, except for jazz/funk/jazz-funk obviously.
