Recording to laptop (nerd centric)

Royter-Hatfood [Edit] [Delete] 21:00, 30 January '09

Right nerds, I'm clueless. There is a jack input for 'mics' on my laptop, but anything I record through it is delayed, making it impossible to play along to drum tracks etc. Seriously, it's like going through a phone modem.

How can I record straight onto the laptop with no time delay? Name me some software/hardware what I need. I'm willing to take all accompanying insults and patronising advice.

(PS To connect I'm using a cable with a little jack at either end and a little jack/big jack adapter to plug into my synth. Is this r-tarded?)
