The practicalities of "selling out".

ducktoplasm [Edit] [Delete] 13:52, 24 February '09

On the whole I regard myself as relatively principled. There's gigs I won't do 'cos it doesn't feel right and I've never ever taken a gig or written a song or released a record for financial gain and I get utterly fucked off with musicians being complete and utter careerists rather than just doing what they want to do.

But I've just been asked if I'm willing to let a song of mine, a decent little throwaway pop song, be used on a series of online advertisements and I've realised I'm not really arsed about it. It's not even a case of "fuck it, I'll take the money" (I'm not even sure they're offering any) or that it'll be exposure for my band or any other nonsense but more a case of "well, I've released this song and if people want to use it for whatever purpose they want to use it for, why shouldn't they?"

Apart from the fact it's generally frowned upon I can't really find a single reason why I'm at all arsed either way about whether they use my song or not and on that basis I'm thinking I'm as well letting them rather than not letting them.

Is there something hugely wrong with my attitude? And what arguments am I missing here?
