Techy question: can you use a preamp on stage instead of an amplifier?

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 21:17, 2 March '09

just thinking about the annoying hassle that is carrying and transporting amps to gigs:

our bass signal gets intercepted and sent to the pa, so the amp itself is only used as a monitor; and the guitar amp is only used clean really, as an effects pedal is used, so...

is it possible to just use preamps instead? don't give a monkeys about real amplifier tone, can a guitar merely go into one of those small preamp units, then into the pa system/desk? imagine a world without large, cumbersome boxes to carry - but with small, pretentious, pink curved boxes called 'pod'
