Contemporary music is ace, and so is 'classic music', but is classical still unparelleled?

Violator [Edit] [Delete] 20:25, 8 March '09

I'm interested to hear what people think here? Fans of rock and 'alternative' music, are generally considered to be biased (usually the targets are commercially mainstream and/ or R&B and rap, and not always unjustifiably). But what do people think of great classical composers and compositions? Someone once told me that of the great artist of the late twentieth century (Elvis, The Stones, The Beatles) are the kings and queens of the music world, then Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Bach, Wagner) are gods. Now I think that's a bit poetic for my liking, but it does summarise a general opinion that we live in the shadow of these monumental, timeless creations. I was listening to Mozart's Requiem today and once again, I'm bought back to how incredible it is and makes everything else I listened to sound really fleeting and 'temporal'. What are people's opinions of classical music, and not just the legendary compositions, but the genre as a whole, in comparison to contemporary music?
