'Shoegaze revivalists': The Horrors vs. A Place To Bury Strangers

Violator [Edit] [Delete] 20:33, 16 April '09

Now straight away I have to make clear that what both these bands have been doing is not exactly the same - I accept that - but it is certainly the case that their current work is influenced in some large part by "the scene that celebrates itself".

Given that, I'd like to point out my impressions since both 'Primary Colours' and 'APTBS' (s/t) have been getting a lot of listens lately, and I would state confidently that APTBS has the superior album of the two.

Please don't get me wrong, 'Primary Colours' is a very interesting album and I do have some respect for it, but up against this other possible example of "nu-gaze" (and yes, I winced using that term), it is no where near as enjoyable nor as impressive, at least according to my ears.

Moreover 'Synthstatic' by Skywave (Oliver Ackermann previous band) is better too.

It's not always obvious to put these bands up against each other but since The Horrors and APTBS have been getting a lot of media coverage at the moment usually in connection to a shoegaze revival, it's an interesting question to ask all the same.

Out of the two, which do you think is the better 'shoegaze' revival album?

Also just as a final point, I have heard that SVIIB don't want to be associated with shoegaze but after listening to them supporting Bat For Lashes on Sunday, I couldn't help but be reminded of Lush. What do you think?
