If you only know Luke Temple in his singer-songwriter guise, prepare to make a rapid re-evaluation. Luke’s new project, Here We Go Magic, adds lush electronica, Afrobeat rhythms and kraut grooves, all topped off by the voice that Sufjan Stevens described as “one of the most beautiful… in pop music.”

“I never really have liked the tag ‘singer-songwriter’,” says Luke. “I want to be free to change as I will.”

Developed over a two-month period of stream-of-consciousness recording at Temple’s Greenpoint, Brooklyn home, the album was recorded as a solo concern. “I was not editing myself as much as I had in the past,” he says, “And I wasn't worrying myself about making sense. Instinct always makes the most sense.”

That this album was recorded solo will be instantly surprising to anyone who listens –this is rich, textured music, gorgeous and multi-layered. The instrumental tracks conjure mystical introspective landscapes reminiscent of Popol Vuh's unforgettable ambience; the vocal tracks are constantly surprising –not least the carnival waltz of closing track Everything’s Big. Temple achieved it all –remarkably –on a cassette four-track recorder, bumping down tracks to layer and layer and layer.

Since its completion, Temple has assembled a four-piece band to perform the work live (the band were one of the must-sees at this years SXSW), and aims to record them as Here We Go Magic in the future. They are fellow Brooklynites Michael Bloch (guitar, vocals), Kristina Lieberson (keyboards, vocals), AJ Lambert (bass, vocals) and Peter Hale (drums).

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Luke Temple has flitted between the east and west coasts for much of his adult life, stopping in Seattle, Mendocino and Boston before settling in New York. He released his debut album, Hold A Match To A Gasoline World, in 2005 and the follow-up, Snowbeast, two years later. A fine arts graduate, he has previously worked as a night janitor at a mall, a sweet shop assistant and most recently a commercial artist painting cherubs and murals on the ceilings and walls of rich New Yorkers.

Though he didn’t begin taking music seriously until he had reached his mid 20s, Here We Go Magic represents the flowering of a unique musical force, respected by peers and deserving of cultish adoration from music lovers world wide.
