Mogwai @ Field Day - and on their own consciences...

TheNo [Edit] [Delete] 19:35, 2 August '09

In light of the level of discussion about Mogwai's apparently triumphant set at Field Day, I am wondering if any other (former?) fans of theirs feel as let down by them as I do.

The Zidane OST aside, everything they have done since Happy Songs has been so turgidly fucking unambitious, that all I can assume is they have mortgages to pay.

I want to love them, and it makes me sad that I don't. That they have won such a fanbase with their brand of music is testimony to a singularity of vision and avoidance of artifice that is rare in British music. They are also decent fellas, with politics and values that I share. Plus I hear they dedicated a tune to Bobby Robson last night.

I say apparently, cos by then I had for the first time in my life left a Mogwai show early cos of something other than train schedules. I wanted to love them. But seriously, the new stuff yesterday was just ballache. So pedestrian.

So: Mogwai c.2009: Michael Nyman with guitars, or not?
