Research - Live laptop performances

PureDATA [Edit] [Delete] 16:35, 19 August '09

Hello people of the DiS messageboard, i'm starting this thread to simply ask as many of you as possible to complete my questionnaire (on attitudes towards laptops being used in live performance) should you have a spare 5minutes to do so. I will be very grateful as you will be helping my final year dissertation research.

Whilst on the topic i think it would be interesting to hear what people's views are on laptops being used in live performance? Are people here fans of Fennesz's live performances? Alva Noto, Rosy Parlane etc?
Do you prefer laptop music performances to be of the dance / idm variety? (Aphex Twin, Coldcut etc)
Do you prefer the laptop to take a seat in amongst conventional instruments in performances? (Pivot, Polar Bear, Isis, These New Puritans)
Or do you prefer that laptops aren't used at all? Boring to watch? Sceptical that the laptop user is actually just pressing "play" and that's it?

Personally I find laptop music more and more intriguing. Having begun to educate myself in the uses of a laptop onstage, particularly live coding and processing, I find I am able to enjoy such performances without the need to see any performer / instrument interaction, and just enjoy the music as a purely auditory event.
