Drone-folk odyssies; Elm and Evan Caminiti

only_shallow [Edit] [Delete] 16:30, 2 October '09

Just received the new solo records from both halves of Barn Owl today and they're blowing me away. I'm already familiar with Elm's work and his new one is stunning; incredibly beautiful, layered psychedelic compositions that sit somewhere between post-rock, doom metal, folk and shoegaze. I can see a lot of people loving this.

Not heard any of Caminiti's work (outside of Barn Owl) as this is the first material he's released that's been anything like widely available and it's totally floored me. 4 tracks, 45 minutes, and a whole host of guitar styles and tones; there are aspects of this which almost evoke Sunn 0))), had they taken Cormac McCarthy as inspiration, but then there are also huge swathes of analogue drone, classical folk guitar figures covered in reverb, and some bleached out psych guitar solos. The atmosphere he creates is nothing short of incredible. Fans of Earth's latter day output would do well to pick this up as it's definitely coming from very much the same place as The Bees/Hex but (whisper it) I think it may well top both of those records for me, with a few more listens.
