BBC 2010 shortlist hastily reviewed..

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 09:43, 8 December '09

Although I'd heard of most of the BBC shortlist, I didn't know what a lot of them actually sounded like - so i'm going through checking them all out in order and writing thoughts as i go.

(Yeh I'm a little bored on my day off but whatever)

DAISY DARES YOU

16 year-old-bubblegum-punk. Like an innocent smoothie consisting of every nightmare i've ever had condensed into three miserable minutes. A limbless tramp's Lilly Allen, and the cheek to not even be fit.

DEVLIN

Ye Olde London Gryme. Debut album called Bud, Sweat and Beers! Thats the best Multipun I've heard since Now Phats What I Small Music. Really shit though. Like Mike Skinner aged four-and-a-half. 'girls are showing their arse, in london city.' quite witless, really.

THE DRUMS

"One of the most talked-about new guitar bands of recent years, this Florida-via-New York quartet borrow apparently unconnected motifs from musical history."

Interesting concept for a band. Hijacking a multitude of styles and welding them together. You'd need an awful lot of talent to pull that off though, hard to tell whether they manage it or not. Needless to say 'lets go surfin' apes early beach-boys with whistled harmonies and lilting guitar, its done with some aplomb. Be interested to hear more.

DELPHIC

One of the more lacklustre performances I've seen on Jools Holland. Swamp-standard guitar band adds techno backing track to the first 20 seconds of a song in the vain hope of being edgy. Song limps along, hobbling to the school-nurses room before ending in a smattering of appluase. Yawn.
