Sufjan Stevens for Xmas - day 2

sean [Edit] [Delete] 10:46, 10 December '09

Yesterday, somewhat bored of hearing yet another person say what a crap, cynical and un-festive idea it is that 'real music fans' are rallying behind Rage Against the Machine to beat X-Factor to the Christmas number 1, I had a daydream.

The vision soon became a nightmare, as doubters (read: HUMBUG!!!! / people not yet in the festive spirit - admittedly I was listening to Jimmy Eat World's cover of 'Last Christmas' at the time) lambasted the idea and tried to suck the fun out of it. But I will not falter and I know that many you are with me on this.

If you like the idea, join the group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=196894760422&ref=mf

But what is the idea? It is thus:
- Sufjan Stevens, one of the finest musicians of our generation, once made a Christmas album
- listening to it again yesterday, I was reminded it's an absolutely amazing Christmas album, festive, fun and inventive
- but not a lot of people (outside of the DiS/niche-music world) know who Sufjan Stevens is
- if one of the songs from said album was talked out and played on the radio more and positioned as a Christmas single, just a few thousand people buying it might get it into the Xmas charts
- amid all of this, more people might investigate the album, his catalogue and, maybe, a whole world innovative, interesting, independently released music

To clarify, this 'campaign' is not about chart positions or sales, it's about people listening to great music. It's also giving the media a hook to hang a Sufjan piece around and radio an excuse to play one of his tracks...

In fact, already, Lauren Laverne is playing 2 Sufjan tracks on her 6music show this morning (http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/shows/lauren_laverne/) to help pick 'the single'. It's currently between:

1) 'That Was the Worst Christmas Ever!' http://bit.ly/Worstian

2) 'Get Behind Me, Santa!' http://bit.ly/Getmas

Which should we choose?
