Film scores (dissertation help-centric)

ah280 [Edit] [Delete] 16:26, 18 February '10

Hiiii! I was hoping some of you folks could help me out and need some questions answered if any of you could spare the time. No worries if no one has the time / can't be bothered...

I'm doing an 8000 word dissertation that 'traces shifts in the form, function and circulatory process of the contemporary film score and how these shifts allude to broader theory on post-Fordist western culture'. My whole argument kinda centers around the idea that Hollywood cinema is increasingly using technology to produce scores with greater use of atonal sonic textures and sound manipulation that distinguish and underline the fewer, fleeting moments of melodic phrasing and motifs. As a result you get short, concise melodic branding of a film and eventually situations arise where the score is used within the context of an intertextual media eg. Sky Sports use in a cricket advertisement the Clint Mansell 'Lux Aeterna' score to Requiem For A Dream (a short and instantly recognisable 8 bar violin motif, essentially) to evoke the dramaturgy of that particular film text and subsequently to ask its audience to project the qualities of Requiem onto a forthcoming cricket match - it tries to relocate audience expectations in correlation to individual emotional and sensual responses to that particular film text. (academic blurb over, I promise!)

Basically it would massively help me out if anyone could be bothered enough to discuss a) their favourite film score or soundtrack and why you think it is effective b) what constitutes a 'good' or 'successful' score and c) how important a film score is to an overall film.

PLEASE help me out. You are awesome if you do.
Al.
