"fan" "funded" "music" or solutions the 99.7% of bands on MySpace without 'funding'

Just reading this interesting article with a hella lot of stats http://nyti.ms/brPRq4

I know there was a big thread about this a while back (here: http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4201338 with 98 replies ) and was wondering whether anyone has changed their mind or tried it out or read anything interesting on the subject?

I thought this Kickstarter blog (they're probably are the best out there but obvs don't just do music) about price points was pretty revealing about what value you have to provide http://blog.kickstarter.com/post/491306881/the-price-is-right "Projects without a reward less than $20 succeed 35% of the time, while projects with a reward less than $20 succeed 54% of the time." but obviously an album doesn't even cost $20 but for people wanting to 'own' a bigger share of an album obviously they need to put in more than $20.

I thought this project was interesting http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/article/the-1000timesyes-2009-tweet-box

Curious what ideas you've tried or seen people trying and thought were good? No-one seems to have found anything that replaces labels and all the examples of acts doing well are usually those who've had the money (and resources and specialist knowledge) to launch via a major label i.e. Amanda Palmer (well, Dresden Dolls were on Warners), Radiohead's In Rainbows, Marillion, etc but I still think there's SOMETHING to this idea. And i have a spin-off idea that I'm investigating at the moment...

p.s. been reading You're Not a Gadget and Jaron Lanier touches on a lot of relevant points about artists not profiting from the promise of the digital revolution i.e. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100315/0243548557.shtml
