The worst venue in London

CrispinAlexander [Edit] [Delete] 20:53, 5 June '10

I think I've been to pretty much every venue an indie/electronic/alt whatever blah band would play and i've narrowed it down to two.

The Dome

On my first visit there I had scattered flashbacks of traumatic P.E lessons in year 5. Think those disturbing dancing flashes from I'm Alan Partridge but with climbing ropes and star jumps in my underpants. Clearly, whoever took over this venue decided that a sterile school gym/raffle hall vibe would really appeal to the hip 18 to 30 indie crowd; a decision which I'm sure was aided by the fact that it looks like it's had zero work done on it.

But it's not all bad...two minute walk to the tube, and the stage is nice and high. IT's just the atmosphere the place gives off...grimey, sawdusty, it's hard to really enjoy anything there.

Alexandra Palace

Start with the good: beautiful place. Worth going just to see the inside and to look at the surroundings. Plus, they do loads of other shit there which I'm sure is great.

Bad? How about the fact that it's a 10,000 capacity venue with no upper tier seating. It's a giant room. Well I guess that's fine if the stage height reflects that, but it doesn't. How is anyone supposes to see shit if you're anywhere further back than the first few rows? I saw Sigur Ros there and I felt like I was attending a life-changing gig but missing out on the life-changing part because I was just staring at heads. Then confetti poured down everywhere and something Jez said in Peep Show came to mind...'This is just like porn, except I can't see anything, I don't have an erection, and I want to cry'

Best venue? Lexington. Hands down.
