Genres and Style

19948 [Edit] [Delete] 15:19, 19 June '10

I was talking to a random the other day and I said I didn’t particularly like beach house, they said “I guess you don’t like indie rock then” (or something to that effect) they just automatically assumed it was the style that I didn’t like about them. If you were going to say this about any genre it definitely wouldn’t be indie since it is such a mess of a genre in the first place but what really annoys me is when people make such categorical claims against genres as if all of one music genre is bad or worse than another. Also this obsession with making new names for different styles of music (“baroque pop” “math rock”) is terrible, genres used be based around style and sometimes what instruments are used (on the whole) and usually were associated with a particular place (Bristol sound/trip hop), I get that it is increasingly hard to categorize bands but fulfilling the need to be different by just calling things different names is just frustrating and pointless. What’s even worse is all of this talk about genes and defining things takes the emphasis away from the quality of music, pop music can be just as good as rock music etc etc and it’s not necessarily the genre that makes it that way.
