Picked this up off emusic after the positive noises from Rock-A-Rolla and the generally intriguing line-up, but what was largely a curiosity download has really paid off. The High Confessions don't really sound much like anything else I've heard, and Turning Lead Into Gold is a very good album. Bits sort of sound like a noisier, more industrial, more hypnotic Liars, while others are similar to the harder weirder end of krautrock (like that found on this year's Faust album). Chris Conelly's vocals are very good, as are the psychedelic, doomy textures presumably summoned up by Minsk's Stanford Parker, but the standout aspect of the album is probably Steve Shelley's drumming. He locks into grooves that stay interesting throughout some very long songs (3 are 10 minutes long, and one is 17) and underpins the entire record.

Basically, if you like Liars, Factory Floor, or industrial edged post-punk and no-wave more generally Turning Lead Into Gold is well worth checking out.
