DJ Screw

Joseph_SP [Edit] [Delete] 20:38, 3 October '10

After all the references to him within pieces on Salem/Witch House/Drag, I decided to check some of his stuff out. The album 3 'n the Mornin' to be precise. And fucking hell, it's brilliant.

Rapping wise it has a lot of the usually hip hop cliches, but sonically its amazing. I can't think of better description than Chopped and Screwed (which apparently involves playing the same track on two decks, slowed down and delayed.) The fact that such a strange sound could be the basis of a whole scene in Houston is rather fantastic.

He did a lot of mixtapes when he was around (he died in 2000), a lot of which can be downloaded. There's also a documentary about him on YouTube, which I had to give up on because I just couldn't understand the Southern drawl.

Anyway, I recommend checking him out, whatever you think of hip hop.
