My brother had this incredibly striking song on a compilation a few years back and I can't remember what it was. It's an instrumental, only violin I believe, sounds like a modern artist, a bit avant garde, really sparse and haunting. Closest thing I could compare it to is one of the Nick Cave/Warren Ellis soundtracks (but without the other instrumentation).

A long shot, but this thread could link on to other good violin based pieces....
