Does 'metal' go through the same 'fashion' changes that indie rock music does?

Violator [Edit] [Delete] 23:04, 11 April '11

I was wondering today while browsing around a music store and looking at the metal section - does metal music experience the same changes where bands come out bringing back an earlier sound from a previous decade or from an old 'scene' in the past.

Indie music does this all the time - you've got you artists tipping their cap to sounds from the 80s, from the 50s and so on.

Do fans of heavier rock music talk about new bands in the same way? Do they say things like, "These guys bring to mind the sounds of X and Y and that [insert influential city] scene from 87' If they do, I've never heard anyone talk like that about heavy metal.

Care to enlighten me anyone - as an outsider? Cheers.
