Great Songwriting?

calumlynn [Edit] [Delete] 22:52, 15 May '11

Okay, so songwritery bands are pretty uncool/non-existant at the moment (especially British ones), but I just wondered if anyone could recommend any recent albums with great songwriting? Songwriting meaning lyrically driven, often melodic, etc, I'm sure people can pull me apart definition wise but you know what I mean really.

The new Bill Callahan album is awesome, as is new Mountain Goats and Okkervil River. Obviously Sufjan from last year. But other than that, it's been a dry lately in terms of songwriters. Wild Beasts have a certain vagueness which doesn't sit well with me.

Also, I don't mean 'singer songwriters' really, I'm a big fan of nice instrumentation so some bloke with an acoustic guitar isn't gonna instantly do it for me (though the Josh T Pearson album was breathtaking).

Any suggestions appreciated!
