solo artists > bands?

beautiful_balloon [Edit] [Delete] 23:49, 7 June '11

After being utterly mesmerised by Sufjan a few weeks ago it occurred to me that I always latch onto solo artists in a much more meaningful way than with bands - and that most of the 'bands' I truly love (Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, The Strokes, Bright Eyes..) are essentially one person's artistic vision

In a similar way to when you discover an author or director and want to hunt down everything they've done, I 'buy into' the vision of the individual in a much deeper way than with a collective - I love the feeling of getting to know an artist through their music, the undiluted journey where their personality is revealed in an entirely singular style- it makes delving into their back-catalogue a lot more satisfying to me somehow, because you're exploring a person's life, not just a bands arbitrary shifts in direction*

So yeah, for me its likes of (early) Patrick Wolf, Rufus Wainwright, Owen Pallett, Jens Lekman, Beirut, Perfume Genius, Sufjan etc etc that get me most excited - does anyone else agree or am I talking shite here ?
