Best songs of the year so far

AdamB [Edit] [Delete] 01:40, 12 June '11

Similar to the Favourite 11 albums of '11 thread, I'm putting together a list of candidates for the best songs of 2011.
Any in particular you'd like to put forward?
If you could give a sentence or two saying what it is you like about your suggestions, all the better.

For my part, I'm embarrassingly keen on Dance to the Beat of My Drum by Nicola Roberts. It's only the song Girls (Who Rule the World) could have been, and it's bringing a much needed Daphne and Celeste-ness to the charts that's been missing from too long.

also: Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells - Glasgow Jubilee
An invigorating aural trudge through some very grubby goings on. Aidan Moffat is incapable of being involved with a bad record.

Cloud Nothings - Heartbeat
It's like he realised he'd written the perfect intro, verse and chorus, so he'd better just knock off and leave it there. Amazingly, at 1 minutes 10 seconds, it could have done with being about 18 seconds shorter.

WORST song of the year so far

Born This Way by Lady Gaga.
Musically and lyrically it's worse than the laziest Mika single. It's a horribly opportunistic stab at being a gay anthem, in the most cynically capitalist way, the "don't be a drag, just be a queen" bit is the least sophisticated word play in the history language, and then they repeat it over and over again, as if to hammer home its inanity. It's just bloody awful, on so many levels. Sorry, I don't need to explain to you why this is bad. I'm sure you already know. Horrible horrible horrible.
