Autechre: Confield, 10 years on

peaceboner [Edit] [Delete] 07:03, 20 June '11

I recently got this record, as I enjoyed Amber, LP5 and Tri Repetae. It's an old record I know but my collection builds backwards as well as forwards. I understand Confield is Autechre's 'controversial' release that divides fan opinion, and given that it's just over 10 years ago that it was released I thought I'd reignite the debate.

Personally, I think it is the wankiest album ever recorded. I realise Autechre are a difficult group at the best of times but Confield seems willfully pretentious and offers hardly any enjoyment to the listener. I suppose being an experimental album it can get away with this - it does after all have incredibly impressive sound art, so I guess it's one of those records you admire rather than enjoy. Even so, I can only conclude it's an emotionless, pointless study of sound manipulation.

I'm not going to be one of those people - "it isn't music!" - of course it is, but take (really cliched example of a noise track coming in 3,2,1...) Oneothrix's 'Nil Admiri'. It conveys exactly what it should - chaos, stress, catharsis. Or Black Dice's 'Seabird', or Fennesz's 'Endless Summer' album that both combine playfulness and beauty. Please, someone enlighten me to the intention behind Confield. (also, apologies for just listing p4k-centric artists, they just spring to mind quicker).

Thoughts please. Especially contrary ones.
