Should bands play what they want to play, or what the fans want to hear?

stanstubbs [Edit] [Delete] 14:36, 24 June '11

Inspired by the Radiohead thread & the "they'll probably play a painfully obtuse set" stuff...

Do you think bands have the artistic right to play whatever songs they want at their shows, or do they have an obligation to play what the fans expect to hear?

I'm a big fan of the Hail/Kid stuff, so seeing Radiohead play a "painfully obtuse" set in Blackpool a few years ago was a dream, and the band seemed to love every minute... Whereas seeing them plod through Reading with a crowd-pleasing 'hits' set was kinda depressing - they looked like they hated about half of it.

Then again, seeing Sonic Youth play the new album in full was pretty tiresome. PLAY TEENAGE RIOT YOU BASTARDS.

What says you?
