We're just over halfway through 2011 - let's review it thus far

vamos [Edit] [Delete] 10:59, 15 July '11

I'm saying, 7/10.

There's been one truly special record in PJ Harvey's 'Let England Shake'. I'd say that's the only solid gold 9/10 record thus far though.

There's been a handful of great 8s too. Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells is brilliant, Wire's effort is their best in a while, the Scottish charity record by The Fruit Tree Foundation is properly great too.

I feel in hindsight that the Gang Gang Dance record is more of a 7 than an 8 now, failing to improve with time. Three trapped tigers & And so I watched you from afar are both pretty good too but I think the second half of 2011 will hopefully bring the rock records of the year.

There's been lots of decent releases by bands struggling to match former glories (Wild Beasts, Cut copy, The Kills, Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, Mogwai, Gang of four, Gruff Rhys, REM).

I'm not a dubstep or hip hop expert sadly, but Curren$y and big K.R.I.T. were both good, is unspectacular.

Of all the new acts, there's been some interesting ones but nothing seems solid gold. The Weeknd, Jamie Woon, Tune-Yards and Katy B seemed to be the best to me but James Blake, Esben & the witch, Toro Y Moi and OFWGKTA have all blown hot and cold.

I'm hoping the second half of the year picks up a bit and brings the noize.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
