Paying to stream gigs online. Good idea or a gimmick?

toffeedaz [Edit] [Delete] 11:58, 26 October '11

I'm thinking of paying £3.99 for the official stream of PJ Harvey gig at the Albert Hall next week.

Has anyone ever streamed a gig before? What did you think?
Obviously it can never match the experience of being there, but was the quality of the picture and sound worth bothering or was it like watching a glorified mobile phone recording of the gig?

Just read an article on streaming a Florence + The Machine gig which raises some interesting points:

Personally I've got nothing against artists making a bit of extra cash if their tour has sold out. It offers the fans who couldn't get a ticket another option of getting to see the gig.
