Evangelist at Cafe Oto

ThierryEnnui [Edit] [Delete] 11:23, 14 November '11

Was anyone there? And if you were, did you, like me, think it was a contender for your gig of the year?

I've not seen a show like that for a long time, maybe ever, with such a sense of intrigue and barely controlled volatility and sensuality. Carla Bozulich was mesmerising, wonderful and genuinely unsettling. There were too many highlights, but the way the various noise elements and strange, awkward stare-outs between band members coalesced in to a beautiful rendition of Low's 'Pissing', or how intense the rendition of 'Black Jesus' was, but the real highlight was of course that distended song, which I thought was a version of Evangelista I but I think I'm wrong there, which saw her crawl across tables with scant regard for pint glasses and personal space, and at one point had her stood on my lap, stretched across the couple in front of me, fondling a girl's hair while she stared me dead in the eyes as she sang. Honestly the most thrilling thing I've seen at any gig. The woman's a genius.
