How do bands afford to be in bands?

chamelious [Edit] [Delete] 11:23, 31 January '12

Ok, i understand how bands like mine operate. Its basically a hobby, we make a loss at most gigs we play, huge losses overall given the amount of gear/merch/PR/fuel/time off work being in a band involves. But we do full time jobs too. I understand that obviously there are some bands that make enough money from their bands to fund the band and maintain living costs too.

What i dont understand is those bands who tour CONSTANTLY, like hundreds of dates a year, but who still barely make anything from their shows and whatnot. The bands who can't have time to work but who also don't make nearly enough to pay for their rent, food, bills, etc.

I understand the "you have to make sacrifices" part. But you can't not pay your rent. I don't believe that all bands touring live on the street or in a van. If you've got any kind of accomodation you have bills, you have to eat, etc.

I wondered if anyone on here has any experience of bands working at this level and would be able to offer any insight.

Thanks
Al
