Do they really, though?
I'm sure they cause a spike in sales (anyone have figures?), but are they really important? Do musicians feel validated by winning an award? A lot of people turn their noses up at awards such as the Brits, but if you were nominated, would you go?

"This award is really special because it was voted for by my peers.."
"This award is really special because it was voted for by the fans.."
etc
