My friend is obsessed with discovering new bands

soulboy1968 [Edit] [Delete] 01:29, 3 March '12

and so is the blogosphere. Just finished Retromania which although flawed and pretty depressing has some interesting arguments and got me thinking. Is hyping bands on the basis of often a handful of tracks healthy for a) these bands before they have a chance to sometimes even put an album together b) for music as a whole? I don't know.

It's great when you discover a band that excite and live up to the expectations but so often they don't. Most of the stuff I buy now sadly is from American bands that have had time to tour extensively and develop over a few albums.

Living in Brighton we have the Great Escape and loved Lanterns on The Lake and Still Corners last year. They both released strong debuts and I hope they are still around in a few years and develop and don't get ignored when their second albums come out like a lot of bands.
