Musicians' side projects/post-breakup bands that are as good as their main band

ThierryEnnui [Edit] [Delete] 13:46, 4 April '12

It's rare for anyone to be equally lauded for more than one band in their career, and anything they go on to do will usually, rightly or wrongly, be regarded as their post-breakup project, or, in the case that their "main" band is still together, a side project. Are there any which you think deserve to be lifted above their more famous band and more recognised?

Off the top of my head, I can think of Old Man Gloom (though that is bordering on a kind of alt-metal supergroup rather than a side-project), especially Christmas, as standing up to stuff by Isis, Cave In and Coverge, which is no mean feat, and Kristen Hersh's solo stuff which for me is even better than her Throwing Muses heyday. But these both have received a lot of attention, so are there any more overlooked/critically unrecognised examples?
