When did music become 'unimportant'?

sean [Edit] [Delete] 22:21, 13 May '12

Interesting little piece http://news.cnet.com/8301-13645_3-57432895-47/when-did-music-become-unimportant/?tag=txt;title

Not sure I agree, but then mostly that's because I think we've all become a lot more absorbed in ourselves and the reason a lot of people are using their phones at gigs is to brag they are there by posting photos and updates, as some sort of presentation of the idea of who they are/want to be seen to be. There's certainly a lot that has changed in the ways in which we view The World and feel less like we're being broadcasted to from up on high.

Then again, maybe a lot of music just isn't as deeply ingrained in our lives as it once was, due to the quick turnover of New Favourite Bands. Even mainstream 'entertainers' are often just makers of a few feel-good anthems, so what are people meant to do at gigs and festival sets, when waiting for That One Song?

Not that this piece was totally about live music, but there's certainly something about the act of listening that has changed. Although I'd be surprised if a lot that article applies to the average DiSser, but I suspect you might recognise a few people you know...
