I like it when bands do this. It emphasises the unique closeness between members.

The Beatles did this. Many contempories of the band describe the four of them as having a collective consiouness. Ringo has said that at the peak of their fame, when there would be an entire floor reserved for them at hotels, the four of them would end up huddled in a single bathroom together. Just to be alone with each other. All four of them described the bands break up of being like a divorce.

Hey Bulldog, from 1967, appears to be a confused missive from Lennon directed at McCartney. At one beat lennon is scathing, stating 'you think you know me but you haven't got a clue' and 'what makes you think your something special when you smile?'. At the next he is almost pleading, howling in the chorus 'you can talk to me'. The end of the song finds Lennon and McCartney larking about together as pals, barkig like dogs, probably stoned.

In 1969, with relationships between band members broken down, McCartney writes The Long and Winding Road. One his most emotional songs, I hear it as a plea to Lennon, who at this stage, strung out on Heroin, was barely participating in The Beatles.

In 1970, post break up, it was down to George to write an emotional elegie lamenting the sad bitter way in which The Beatles ended.
