Music Social More…

The prog genre flourished again in the 80s with bands such as Marillion, while acts such as Porcupine Tree and Muse have helped carry it into the 21st Century

Van der Graaf Generator are five times better than every band in that article combined, of course, but is it not limiting to think of 'prog' as a genre, when there is so much brilliant music in existence that uses progressive structures and unconventional musical narratives OTHER than that which expressly parades the baroque and somewhat dated stylings of Genesis, Floyd et al? Most notably, why is there no room for avant-rock and cutting-edge experimentation at these Prog Awards? Porcupine Tree is worthy fare within the given context, but compared to many contemporaries of alt-rock their sound is distinctly vanilla.

The solidification of a disparate group of musical movements into such a stale bower of politeness? 'Prog', I disown thee.
