Music and how your expectations can influence your initial listens

Antelope [Edit] [Delete] 06:07, 3 February '13

Having just listened to the new MBV album for the first time, this got me thinking. I remember reading a lot of negative or dismissive reviews about (forgive me) The King of Limbs when it first dropped, because people obviously hold Radiohead to a pretty high level, so expect something that's going to INNOVATE or going to be INFLUENTIAL for years to come (obviously this is impossible to gauge until... well... years to come. So initial reviews are always going to be speculation in that regard). After having listened to KoL's more though, and after the initial hype, better reviews starting coming in. I find that people seem to think quite highly of it now, even ranking it quite high in lists of favourite Radiohead albums. It sort of goes without saying that people wouldn't have dedicated that much attention to it if it wasn't The Radiohead's, and most other albums don't get the chance to be analysed to the degree they do.

I'm really liking the new My Bloody Valentine, other than the rubbish album title which I'm convinced was only named that way to make it an easier word to trend on Twitter. I can't help but think if it were by anyone else I wouldn't really care much for it. I'm listening to it with an open-mind, yet knowing fully well what to expect and probably finding excuses for why it's so good to begin with. See also: Aphex Twin 'druqks' retrospectives.

TL;DR Indie bedwetting crying and stating the obvious. Lacks form and doesn't really draw any interesting conclusions. 4.2/10.

What albums have you listened to and initially been disappointed by, only to love later on once you "got it"?
