Recommend me some melancholy country rock please

Fuzzy_Dunlop [Edit] [Delete] 09:35, 17 December '13

that isn't Neil Young.

Anything like The Magnolia Electric Co. album by Songs: Ohia. As in, that "big band" sound where it sounds like there are loads of people playing in a room, echoes of desperation in the lyrics, but the music has a vaguely celebratory hint to it, like "things are fucked, man, but we're all just gonna play really loud country rock together in a room and just tell it how it is".

Stuff like this I find great listening to at this time of year, and I wish they played music like this in pubs more often. I find it strangely uplifting; I think because the "big band" sound makes you imagine lots of people playing instruments together and they're all sharing the same melancholy mood, but with an "we're all in this together" sort of spirit. Great drinking music as well.
