Most depressing music experience
I remember the night that MTV decided to broadcast Oasis' Manchester gig on the Be Here Now tour. They had spent the previous week overloading the airwaves with ads declaring, "The BAND of the DECADE are BACK!!!!", "LIVE in over 30 COUNTRIES!!!" or whatever. None of that mattered to me as I just wanted to watch the gig live on TV.
Noel Gallagher did an interview a few hours before they went on-stage where he looked as bored as a Roman emperor... then came the actual performance. The moment Oasis ceased to be a life-affirming force for me. Guigsy and Bonehead playing and looking like animated mannequins, Noel's crypto-cock rock guitar playing and a Liam Gallagher performance that just confirmed his reputation as one of the most unpleasant individuals ever to blemish the earth. And the songs... Not only were they played with all the emotion that a a Microsoft employee reserves for ordering a new filing cabinet, they just went on and on. And on. And on. And THEN Noel started soloing. It was a rainy Sunday night, my homework still wasn't finished... it felt like a real kick in the gut, as sad as that sounds to you youngsters ;-)
All this is compounded by the fact that every Sunday/Bank Holiday/Day-that-you-want-to-smash-your-face-in-just-for-something-to-do after that for about two months, MTV repeated the gig (sans Noel's "Who the fuck are Man Utd?" ad lib, of course). And THEN it made its way on to VH1. It was almost funny that that gig was broadcast to over 30 countries.
<Rant over> Sorry about that. Anyone else got any similar stories about gigs, albums, festivals that seemed like the most anti-climatic, degrading experience in the Universe?
