Pet Sounds
It's the most critically acclaimed album ever, by about a million miles. The only mentions, though, that Brian and co ever seem to get round here are the obligatory "Beach Boys-esque harmonies" comments that come up in conjunction with just about every band who utilise two simultaneous vocal lines at some point on one of their recordings.
So what does everyone think? Does it deserve its status? Is it overrated? Is it just not that good when compared to the newer classics that are continually being added to the canon?
I'll start. No, it's not overrated. If there has to be an all-time number one, "Pet Sounds" is most deserving of the title. It's a tour-de-force of everything that makes pop what it is - great songwriting, awesome production, lavishly colourful arrangements and ambitious everyman themes performed with unabated passion and undying charisma.
And it'd certainly be amongst my personal ten or so favourite albums any day of the week.
Anyone else?
