In the 60's people often released singles that didn't appear on albums (hence the beatles' red and blue singles compilations).

Since great singles and great album tracks are such different beasts, why has this practice died out? Why are half the songs on an album now released to be spoiled by constant radio rotation?

Can anyone think of recent examples of singles that didn't appear on an album? Razorlight's "somewhere else" springs to mind...
