going part time / freelance

chris-budget [Edit] [Delete] 10:15, 17 February '10

Yo!

I work as an inhouse web designer for a company that makes pretty dull things. It's stable and ok paying, but rarely interesting in anyway at all with pretty much zero career progression as it is a relativley small company.

I'm thinking of dropping down to a four day week and using the remaining day to work on freelance stuff from home which i think will be a much more rewarding experience, will vastly improve my portfolio and has advantages of being able to listen to awesome music all day!

I've discussed with my boss and he is pretty cool with the basic plan but I am wondering if this brief sketch of an idea ( given the RECESSIONZ) is totally mad.

I'm giving myself 6 months to have a proper business plan laid out and work in the pipeline before committing to the idea, but has anyone had any experience of this sort of shift? any tips etc? am i just going to end up with a fifth less moniez?

Thanks all!
