Fat Tax

elyka [Edit] [Delete] 19:44, 3 May '10

Ok so I had an idea.

The idea of taxing junk food has been raised numerous times by several nations, but is usually strongly opposed. I'm wondering if you guys think this would be successful?

I don't think it would be successful, and am generally opposed to pigovian taxation. Instead of punishing people for eating junk food the governments should be promoting healthy lifestyles by using incentives. Everyone likes to indulge once in a while. If it were somehow possible to give tax breaks to people who have healthy weights, and lifestyles then I think we would see a vast reduction in the number of obese people. The only problem is I have no idea how governments could monitor this because it'd be easy to cheat the system
