God Is In The Pod Episode 1!

So after months (I mean weeks) in the planning, editing and rerecording, I'm finally unleashing the first ever http://www.godisinthetvzine.co.uk podcast on the general public. Well I say first but Owain has been releasing his ace Quackspout podcasts for a good while and they are in truth the inspiration behind mine. I've still got teething problems with the voice recording ie my mic, so if it sounds alternately like I'm down a well on a speaker phone, or speaking through a cup held together by two bits of string, I apologise! You can click the link below to stream this podcast, but I recommend downloading it and then boosting the sound on your real player/itunes/media player. But most of all I hope you enjoy the music! Remotely Interested: Ashes to Ashes, Doctor Who

First up, Ashes To Ashes the sequel show to BBC1’s critically acclaimed Life On Mars. Life On Mars told the story of Sam Tyler who, after a car crash, wakes-up in the seventies under the employment of whiskey sodden, nicotine stained DCI Gene Hunt, a copper who treads the line between heroism and villainy like a sheriff in the old west. Hunt and Tyler are made fully believable by razor sharp writing, dialogue and natural chemistry between the actors who did nothing short of inhabit the duo, John Simm (Tyler) and Philip Glenister (Hunt). LoM ended with Tyler awakening from a coma (the root of his seventies dreamscape) to be disillusioned with a real world that felt colder and lonelier than the one he’d left behind. Yearning to return to 1973 and the girl he’d left there, Sam jumps off a roof, killing himself but sending his consciousness back in time for his last moments of life, moments which his dying brain apparently managed to stretch out for seven years of life in his fantasy world.

In Advance: High Violet

The National

By all accounts The National had hoped to create a more immediate, poppier, less morose record than we have come to expect from them. By this measure, 'High Violet' is ostensibly a failure. On the other hand, they have managed to make one of the most beautiful, desperate, frustrated and delicate albums I have heard, since, well, 'Boxer'. No small compensation.

The Silver Screen: April

A fitting way to kick-off God is in the TV Zine’s brand spanking new monthly film feature is to begin as we mean to go on. Thus, in this first installment we have aimed to deliver a selection of celluloid critiques , in-depth cinematic musings and the best (and worst!) ways to enjoy film on the small screen at home.

April has seen the clash of box-office titans with the Easter weekend providing a focal point of financial comparison. The 3D blockbusters Clash of the Titans, How to Train your Dragon and Nanny McPhee 2, saw an approximate cumulative Easter weekend gross of £18,000,000 between them, once again confirming the Easter weekend as the second-most profitable weekend in which to release a film.

However, it hasn’t simply been a case of 3D films packing the punch. The 2D British film Kick-Ass has wowed critics and box-office tallies alike, adding over £7,000,000 to the UK’s April box-office kitty.

So, it’s been a financial windfall at the cinemas to say the least, but numbers and stats aside, have this month’s cinema and DVD releases been any good and what burning issues have arisen?
