Just finished reading this. I enjoyed it and it was a diverting way of spending a few days' worth of train journeys, but I struggled to understand why it's got this reputation as a modern classic. Anyone fancy explaining why they love it so much?

Subquestion: what "classic"* books do you regard as over-rated?

*loose definition of the word "classic" - not just referring to The Iliad, etc
